Citizens for Crime Awareness began in St. Boniface in September, 1982. The ground work for setting up this chapter was done by the Crime Prevention officer for St. Boniface/St. Vital, who initially approached eight concerned area residents with his proposal for a community crime prevention organization. They were receptive to his idea, formed an interim executive and set out to establish an educational program. The executive soon grew to have 21 members. A Citizens for Crime Awareness Community Crime Prevention office, the first in the city, was opened on December 1, 1985.

In the years since 1982, other chapters have been established across the city of Winnipeg.
