New Auto Theft Record!

In the past 2 years Winnipeg has seen record-breaking reductions in Auto Theft. 2008 produced the lowest year for Auto Theft
this decade and we've seen 28 consecutive months with Auto Theft reductions compared to the previous year.

In February 2009 we saw the lowest month for Auto Theft with 177 actual stolen vehicles and it is a dramatic decline from November 2004 which saw a high of 1,132 vehicles stolen.

On March 3rd, 2009 a record was set that won't be re-broken. There were 0 stolen vehicles on this day - the first time that has occurred in Winnipeg this decade.

This says alot about how much has been done to fight this problem and only a few short years ago we were experiencing weeks with averages of 40+ thefts per day. Winnipeg has seen multiple days with only 1 auto theft during this past year and now a shutout can be added to the list of accomplishments.

Also of note, in 2009 there have been an average of 6 auto thefts per day, a decline of over 75% compared to the recent years.

In 2005 the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) partnered with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and Manitoba Justice (Youth Correctional Services and Prosecutions) in the Winnipeg Auto Theft Suppression Strategy (WATSS).

The goal of the Strategy is to reduce Auto Theft in Winnipeg committed by youth offenders. Resources are also utilized for adult auto theft offenders. This project is funded directly by MPI.

Within WATSS, the youth are divided into four risk categories ranging from Level 1 (At Risk Youth) to Level 4 (High Risk Offenders). This multi-agency approach has proven to be quite successful and since 2004 there has been a dramatic decrease in vehicle thefts and attempts.

Reducing the number of stolen vehicles on Winnipeg streets improves public safety and efforts are ongoing to create further reductions.
